赤口日指每年農曆正月初三。根據中國傳統習俗，當日容易與人發生口角爭執，為防招惹口舌是非，各人均不出外向親友拜年，只留在家中祭祀神明，故赤口日亦稱為「小年朝」。
赤口亦為「赤狗日」，是一個不吉利的日子。傳說中赤狗是「熛怒之神」，會帶來不吉，故此農曆正月初三是凶日，不宜外出及宴客；另外，「赤」字含「赤貧」之意，外出沖犯赤狗會帶來貧窮。如一定要外出拜年，可放一道化口舌符袋於身上，以化解口舌。
傳說初三晚是「老鼠娶親」的日子，故當晚一般人都會提早睡覺，以免騷擾鼠輩親事。當晚亦會有「老鼠分錢」的習俗，在家中角落灑鹽、米、糕餅供鼠輩們享用，這些給老鼠的食物稱為「米粧」，寓意於新一年間與老鼠共享收成。
不同地方於赤口日有不同的習俗：清代期間，閩南人有「出郊展墓」的習俗，即到祖墳祭祀；在香港，不少人會到車公廟祈福、或到黃大仙 拜神求籤、亦有人會到郊外遠足或參與賽馬活動。
